Superbly acted, exceptionally directed, and beautifully shot—there aren’t enough superlatives to describe this film adaptation from an August Strindberg play. Liv Ullmann, better known to American audiences as an actress in several Ingmar Bergman films, adapted and directed the film. Over the past decade she has steadily made a name for herself as an accomplished arthouse director, and this film only continues that impression. Miss Julie, played by Jessica Chastain, is an aggressive woman for 1890 Ireland, who pushes the boundaries of class and feminine sexuality. Rounding out the small cast is Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton, both whom bring a European authenticity to the film.
