NYFF Review

Alice Rohrwacher’s follow-up to CORPO CELESTE is a thoughtful, naturalistic story of Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu), a teenage girl who lives with her beekeeping family in rural central Italy. The winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the film is bolstered by a documentary approach to its presentation, and excels at following the rituals of an all female family (a mother and four daughters) being domineered by the father. The acting feels authentic, which heightens the film’s believability. The film does drag at times and is easily 20 minutes too long.

Grade: B-
